PAN card is an important document. It is a must-have for anyone who undertakes any business in India and earns taxable income as a result. In previous articles, we explained how to check PAN card status and how to apply for PAN card online. We also covered the benefits of PAN and where it is needed. We explained the alternative to PAN card (Form 60) and who is eligible for it. In this article, we explain how to apply for PAN card correction. We recommend you read the other articles to better understand the process of filing and tracking PAN application.

The PAN card is issued by the IT Dept. Due to a mistake from either the portal’s behalf or on the applicant’s behalf, the PAN details may be wrongly printed. To set this straight, we can file for a PAN card with the correct details. Note that the process is identical to filing for PAN card. If you have previously filed application for PAN card online, you can easily apply for correction/reprint.

Note that it is against the law to hold more than one PAN number. You can hold duplicates of one PAN card but cannot hold two different PAN. Anyone violating this could be fined for an amount of Rs.10000.

Before filing for correction, Read the guidelines for filling out the application and the Dos and Don’ts of applying.

What to do if my PAN card is lost or damaged?

If your PAN card is lost or damaged, you can file for a duplicate PAN card. We don’t say you file for a new PAN card since a new PAN card would mean one different from the existing one. Duplicate PAN card implies that the PAN and the rest of the PAN details remain the same.

How do I apply for a duplicate PAN card?

The process of filing for a duplicate PAN card is exactly the same as the process for applying for PAN card correction with a few minor changes.

How to apply for PAN card correction

When applying for PAN correction, the application is different for different users.

How to apply for PAN card correction?

1. Steps to file for PAN correction (for DSC users):

  • Visit the application for DSC users on the NSDL website
  • Choose the category of applicant. For a person choose ‘Individual’; for Joint Hindu Family Business, choose ‘Hindu Undivided Family’.
  • Fill the form as per the guidelines.
  • In options 7 and 8 choose if there is any correction required photo or signature. In option 10, choose if there is change of address
  • If there are no changes (for users applying for duplicate card, do not tick any of the options)
  • In option 14, mention if you have been allotted any PAN numbers apart from the one you seek to update. It is VERY IMPORTANT to mention since it is an offence to hold more than one PAN as mentioned above.
  • Under point 15, choose the documents you wish to attach to supply proof of PAN allotted.
  • Choose the type of PAN you want. E-PAN costs less since it is generated digitally and sent in digital format. Physical PAN is sent to the communication address of the person/entity. Hence, Physical PAN costs more.
  • Upload the documents then click on submit.

For duplicate PAN card applicants, the process remains the same. Except the part where they have to choose the corrections. They should not tick any points regarding corrections. They should file the form without choosing any option to correct the existing PAN details.

2.For non-users of DSC, the NSDL online application is available here.

  • Under Application type, choose changes in correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN card.
  • Fill in the rest of the details.
  • On the next page, a token number will be displayed. Note this token number. It serves as a reference number throughout. Though this number is sent to the applicant’s email, it is better to write it.
  • Under Applicant Type/Category of Applicant, choose the entity you seek changes in PAN card for.
  • Fill in the required details
  • Choose the method via which you will submit the documents.
  • Submit digitally through e-KYC & e-Sign (Paperless)
  • Submit scanned images through e-Sign on NSDL e-gov or C-DAC (e-sign charges are Rs 5.90 in both cases)
  • Forward application documents physically
  • Then choose the mismatch that would like to correct. (Photo, Signature, Parent name)
  • Tick the required box and click on next
  • Next, the address box will be prefilled if the aadhar card details have been filled earlier. Tick the box beside this address if you wish to change this. Following this, you will be required to produce a proof of address for the updated address.
  • Mention what document you will attach as proof of identity, address and date of birth. Also provide a copy of PAN card or PAN allotment letter. This serves to state that the applicant was in fact issued a PAN.
  • Mention the number of documents attached
  • Upload the documents.
  • Review the form and pay the required fees.
  • After the successful submission of the form, a receipt/acknowledgment slip will be generated. The applicant should take a print of it and send it to the NSDL e-gov office along with the physical proof of documents. Also affix a photograph in the space provided and sign across it. You must write ‘Application for PAN Change’ on top of the envelope along with the acknowledgement number.

For duplicate PAN card applicants, the process remains the same. Except the part where they have to choose the corrections. They should not tick any points regarding corrections. They should file the form without choosing any option to correct the existing PAN details.

How to apply for PAN correction?

3. Through UTIITSL

The process for filing is same for UTIITSL as well. In UTIITSL, the applicant has to choose beforehand:

  • If he wants to upload the documents digitally or physically send the documents through courier.
  • How he will sign the documents. (e-sign or DSC)
  • If he wants Digital PAN or Physical.

The rest of the procedure is same as NSDL

For duplicate PAN card applicants, the process remains the same. Except the part where they have to choose the corrections. They should not tick any points regarding corrections. They should file the form without choosing any option to correct the existing PAN details.

Digilocker

We suggest our readers to use DigiLocker. An application made by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This stores all the official documents of a person in digital format. This is especially helpful at times when the PAN card is lost or damaged. Until the new PAN card arrives, the digital PAN card on the phone can be used as a valid proof.
